"Egg in the Hole" – A family favorite!

During a recent visit to North Carolina, I introduced my granddaughter to a cherished family tradition: "Egg in the Hole," as I think most people refer to it.  We called it “Egg in the Middle.”

The Tradition

"Egg in the Hole" is more than just a breakfast dish. It's a symbol of love, family, and continuity. This simple, yet delightfully entertaining dish for children, taught to me by my mother, brings back so many fond memories of my own childhood.

A New Generation: Sharing Family Food Traditions

Watching my granddaughter enjoy "Egg in the Hole" for the first time was a heartwarming experience. Her eyes lit up with curiosity as I explained the steps, and she was eager to help. The delight on her face as she took her first bite was priceless. These simple moments of family connection are the foundation of cherished memories.

Making Your Own

If you'd like to try making "Egg in the Hole," here's a simple recipe:

  1. Cut a hole in the center of a slice of bread (a cookie or biscuit cutter works great! I bought mine from Pampered Chef years ago).
  2. Heat a hefty tablespoon of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.  Let it melt and spread across the pan. The butter is key to "toasting" the bread and adding delicious flavor.
  3. Place the bread and the cutout in the pan and crack an egg into the hole.
  4. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. Cook until the egg barely begins to “set” and the bread is golden brown on the bottom.
  6. Gently flip it (and the cutout piece) over to finish cooking the egg until it still has its “swimming pool” yoke.
  7. Serve and enjoy!

I hope this simple dish brings as much joy to your family as it has to mine. Family recipes, like family portraits, capture special memories that stand the test of time.

Family Connections and the Importance of Tradition

Family traditions, especially those involving food, have a unique way of connecting us to our past and each other. Sharing this simple dish with Maddie brought back wonderful memories of my own childhood, making "Egg in the Hole" with my mother. Now, it’s my turn to pass this food tradition down to the next generation.

It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of family bonding through food, and how meaningful it is to pass down traditions. As a family portrait photographer in Perry Hall, I often witness similar connections when capturing families together, creating visual memories that, like food traditions, can be cherished for generations.
